28 Monumental Black Films v1

There is no order to this list, they all hold their own and have a place at the table,as well as the few mini-series that are included. This list isn’t my black joy list, with a few exceptions, a lot of these I can’t watch more than once. This list is important because the truth and history of the Black experience is very important,it’s often amazing but it’s not always Black Joy.

Once Upon A Time When We Were Colored(1995)

This one starts my list because it’s’ the first Black movie I remember. The strongest scene from my young memory is seeing the main character’s Grandpa (shown above) stare down KKK member at a parade. Strong, proud, and beautiful, despite the time period it depicts.

Collecting Black keys for Black History Month

So as we come to our favorite time of the year, and so what I’ve decided to do is add to my collection specifically by buying some Black key issues.

Iron Man #118

This is the first appearance of James “Rodey ” Rhodes, who becomes War Machine. This issue should not be mixed up with Iron Man #282 [the issue below](which is being sold as the first appearance of War Machine).

NOT FIRST APPEARANCE OF RODY

BUT in actuality, it is the first appearance of the War Machine armor which was first worn by Tony Stark. It wasn’t until #284 that Rodey took up the moniker of War Machine.
I bought this for about $25*, but the condition isn’t great I’ll give you a better idea once it arrives. I do believe it is so cheap because people are frantically buying #282.

 Teen Titans #45

This is the first appearance of Karen Beecher who will later become Bumblebee from the Teen Titans. It was a little bit under $10, and it was in pretty good condition.

Invincible Iron Man #1

This is the first cover of Ironheart (Riri) on the cover in costume.I’ve given up trying to buy her first appearance I’m too late and I’ve accepted it. This comic was exactly $10, and should be arriving in the newt week.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16

I don’t own this one yet but I am currently in two bid wars to own copies. This is the first appearance of Monica Rambeau . Now I had assumed that I had this, only to realize after WandaVision came out and a search through my keys revealed i was wrong. Now because of the popularity, I’m on a desperate run to get this comic before another episode can come out and drive the price up any farther.

*You are probably wondering why I am not concerned about the condition.Often with older keys if you aren’t willing to shell out a couple of hundred you probably won’t get high quality and being the fact that this isn’t a character I love, I’d rather have a issue that’s not in great shape and most of my money for keys I’m searching for.

5 tip to investing in comics on a budget

#5 Don’t just go for first appearances there are different types of keys

You have deaths, rare variants, change of names, changes of outfits, change of artists, 2nd appearances, key fights, the list goes on. Expand your search to keys as a whole not just to 1st appearances. Also occasionally a 2nd appearance or even a 2nd print might be worth more than the first. Miles Morrales 2nd appearance variants are worth almost 3x more than the 1st appearance, and the 2nd print of Black Panther #1 Vol 3 that I bought for $2 is now selling for $36 and up. The thing is when people price comics only the first appearances or really rare variants are priced high, but there is so much more to it than that.

#4 Go to shops that sell comics & even random places that sell used stuff

Not comic book shops, not if you’re looking for deals(unless it’s free comic book day), but shops that sell comics as a side business. There may be a chance that people that work there will know their comics, or (your hope) a chance that they won’t. And you might find a key issue priced at $4, that’s how I got most of my keys. Garage sales, auctions, are also good places to try. I even found two polybagged copies of Ultimate Spider-Man #160( The Death of Spider-man) at Goodwill, for like seventy-five cents apiece. You never know where you may find a deal.

#3 Know what you’re looking for by the cover

A big reason why my Uncanny X-Men and New Teen Titans collections are so big is that I memorized covers, not all but at least 30. So when I go to shops I automatically know what I to look for, so I don’t spend all of my time going back and forth between my phone and the comic bin. I studied what I want so when I go out I don’t have to do anything but search. And because when I look I’m aware that people on price 1st appearances heavily I focus on other keys and they normally aren’t marked up.

#2 Pre-order key issues or get them held by their local comic book shop

The biggest way in the world to save money on comics as they come out is to have a pre-order and a have pull-list at your neighborhood comic book shop. This ensures that when something you want comes out you get it before it hits the floor. Nothing sucks more than knowing you were an hour too late to get a comic you wanted. After that, you can get it only online for double the cost, or wait for a 2nd printing.

#1 Get an app like Key Collector Comics

No, I don’t have an affiliate link or anything but this is how I stay updated in the world of comics, without having to frantically search all the time. It’s $2 a month and I’ve had it for like, 2 years I think. It’s how I know what’s coming out, and how I keep track of my keys. This is how I know what keys to pre-order so I don’t have to scramble for them. This is also how I have been able to memorize what I’m looking for. They tell you what’s popular, there’s a list of what’s coming out for the next few months, and even give you an option to write down the keys that you have. The only thing I wish they did have was a place to put all the comics that you have.

Crossovers: Bruce Wayne Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D

Done by Amalgam who has a whole series of Marvel x DC characters in a blended world.

First, you should know that not every character is a blend of multiple characters. Bruce Wayne isn’t a blend of anyone .He’s mostly himself if he became a spy in this infused world and not the bat. His parent’s like in most iterations are murdered, but this time by the Green Skull( L.L.), the leader of Hydra. So Bruce has done whatever necessary to become the director of S.H.I.E.L.D to get revenge. Nick Furry is just original (pre-MCU) Nick Furry, no change really.

The FUN

Hmmm, you could be thinking that, it looks like Moonknight, but the color scheme is all wrong. And you would be right.

This is Moonwing.

Get it, Moonknight x Nightwing.

So you may be thinking this would be just Batgirl/woman, no? But no this is a blended world people. This is Barbara Gordon Hardy, the Black Bat. A mixture of Batgirl x Black Cat, who is also an agent of S.H.E.I.L.D. as well.I actually didn’t catch the blend of who she was at first, but the name give it way. Black cat’s name is Felicia Hardy. Did I mention she’s dating Bruce.

THE STORY

So as the Green Skull daughter tries to take over Hydra will the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D prevail, who was the former Moonwing, and why does he want revenge? How does Bane fit into any of this ,will Bruce Wayne ever get revenge for his parents murder? Are there even more blended characters?

All will be revealed in issue #1 of Bruce Wayne Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

My comic-book goals for 2021

-To complete my collection of at least one Milestone comicbook series or, or at minimum 75% of one.

-Sniff out at least one key issue that will be major for the upcoming years to come(ex: last year I got the first appearance of Knull).

-find at least one independent mini-series to love(Last year it was Strayed and Marked).

-Take a record of all the comics that I have(I do not look forward to this).

-Get at least 3 keys of Black characters in one of the big 2 universes.

-Collect every issues of Milestone anything that comes out this year.

-Not to pre-order so many comics that I feel overwhelmed.

-Go to used comicbook shops and find at least one under-priced comic.

-Find at least one key issue variant that will accrue value

5 comics I want to add to my collection 1/2021

In no particular order.

Tomb of Dracula #12

2nd appearance of Blade, because I’m never going to spend the money for Tomb of Dracula #10 which is his first appearance. I have never paid over $50 for a single comic, and although I like Blade, I could never see myself paying hundreds for a single issue of anything.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16

This 1st of appearance of Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau. I love her and want it.Although I actually might have this issue in a second location but I’m just unsure.

Black Panther #2 (2009)

First appearance of Shuri, need I say more.

Amazing Spider Man #10 (1998)

First Punk Spider. I love the Spiderverse, but I particular love this guys story so I HAVE to buy it.

Naomi #1

I heard nothing but greatness and I just want to read it.

My top ten comics of my collection

One of my biggest love is comics, I have been reading for years and been collecting comics since I was about 18/19.So I’m making myself choose if I had to run away with only ten what would I take.

10: Batman #686

You will probably wonder with everything else being keys why I love this one, it’s purely story .This is the comic that gives us my favorite Batman side story. In telling of how Bruce died, we get a story of how Alfred is the Joker.

Yeah, let that sink in.

But in this story he needed a villain to remain sane, and Alfred loving him that much became what Bruce needed. In fact all of the Bruce’s villians are just actors, friends of Alfred’s.

9:Ultimate Fallout #4[polybagged; first appearance of Miles Morrales]

Uhhh, let’s just say I called it.

8:Fantastic Four#52[first appearance of Black Panther]

I grew up with the 90s marvel movies and I was waiting for this movie and as I started to buy comic and saw how the tends went as movies came out. I knew I only had so much time until T’chala graced the silver screen, so early 20s me found a “cheap” beat up copy. I never imagine I’d wait as long as i did but I made the right choice.

7: Uncanny X-Men Annual #14[first cameo appearance Gambit]

I am unwilling to pay for the “true first appearance ” but I love Gambit so I got this instead.

6:Spider Man Noir #1 [first appearance signed but no GCG present (sigh)]

Found this underpriced at $5! Snatched it up so quick.

5:DC Comics Presents #26[first appearance of Cyborg, Raven and Starfire]

Like many I grew up watching the Teen Titans so this was a must for me.

4:Ultimate Comics: Spider Man #1 [Unmasked Pichelli Variant[1st solo and 2nd appearance for Miles Morales, first appearance of Ultimate Prowler]

It’s my favorite cover of Ultimate Comics: Spider Man #1(yes I have others), I will buy comics just because of a cool variants. I did not expect these variants to blow up like they did. But I have no complaints.

3: Icon#1 [1st appearance of Icon and Rocket]

You could easily call Icon a superman rip off, except, this comic is 100x deeper ,no offense to the big S. It’s starts off similar, a ship arrives carrying precious cargo. It scans the nearest person and gives him that appearance , of Blackness.

One problem oh this is the 1800s,yeah slavery.

Fast-forward to 90s we have a very detached well to-do Black conservative man that hides his powers. Who meets a teen who challenges his way of life and how he uses his powers.

2: Static #1 [first appearance of Static]

Static means a lot to me. I watched it when it came out in the 90s in the TV show Static Shock. It was the first animated show I had seen about a Black superhero, not just a person in a group but the lead.

1.Fantastic Four #53[2nd appearance of Black Panther, first appearance of Klaw 1.8 official CGC rating BUT SIGNED BY STAN LEE]

I always really wanted FF:52(#8 above) but before I could afford that, I decided I could at least afford the 2nd appearance. And when my friend went to a con we got Stan Lee autograph. It’s the favorite forever now that we’ve lost our excelsior.

Making a cute instagram…

So unbeknownst me there’s a Kawaii branch of Instagram that’s all about taking pictures of your cute setup and gaming things, and collectibles and figurines.

Ok, so you’re probably saying well yeah that’s just Instagram.

I feel like yes, I should have known. But I’ve never really used Instagram so it makes since.Especially not the one for this blog. It’s pretty empty.I have a couple of pictures of some businesses and museum exhibits but like that’s like three post.

So if anything I’m interested.Recently my style has been flowing between my regular goth love and my new forming love of pastel. I’ve always loved cute things so I think that my Instagram might start reflecting pictures of the nerd things I know…

Maybe…

Is the Super Mario 3D All Stars Collection worth it???

Yes, I know it’s running via an emulator, yes I know they are only selling it for a certain time. Yes I know the design is basic and they could have spent way more time working on remaking it from the ground up.

But there’s one big thing that you may be assuming.

That any of those are a factor in me buying and enjoying games.

I would say that I am a Nintendo fangirl. My first console was the NES, and I’ve always, always had a Nintendo handheld. But growing up we couldn’t afford other Nintendo consoles, so it would be an understatement to say that I missed out on a lot of games.

For example, I’ve been wanting to play Mario Sunshine for years now. I can’t even tell you what about it appealed to me, but I just wanted to play it.

So when this collection was announced, I knew I wanted it but I hesitated. I hadn’t played any of them and wasn’t sure if I wanted to pay $60 for games that would be ported over from older consoles.

With so many new games that I want coming out, I wasn’t sure if it was worth spending money on old games.

I broke down and just decided to get it, these games were classics that people had played and loved, and maybe just maybe I would love them too.

My honest thoughts:

I love them, old graphics and all. I’m not a Mario fanboy at all, and I still really love these games. They’re fun, really creative, and I love the things that you can do with Mario, the different mushrooms and finally figuring out where Rosalina came from. It’s like relearning to play Mario all over again.

What’s really funny is although I bought the set, really excited to play Sunshine, it’s my least favorite of the three. Super Mario Galaxy is amazing, it’s the game I never knew I needed in my life. Super Mario 64 is way more challenging than it should be, lol, and Sunshine is ok, not bad, but ok. For now, I’m spending most of my time on Galaxy, I love it’s gravity and motion controls.

So if I had it to do over again would I spend it again for this compilation?

Totally, especially if you haven’t played these games before. It gives you a greater appreciation of what they’re doing with Mario games now and it gives you a greater perspective on how far the franchise has come.
